“Rasa” is originally a Sanskrit word that means “juice, taste, essence” or an indescribable feeling. It is also used in the Indonesian and Malay language to refer to “a feeling” or “flavour”. Most Asian home cooks will know this word as the secret ingredient to any well-made meal, Cooking with “rasa” means to cook with your instincts and a sense of “feeling” and not just follow a recipe blindly. It’s about immersing your entire being into the task – your sense of sight, smell, and sound.

It’s an apt word to name this intoxicating scent, launched on Deepavali, as cooking and candles go hand in hand at The Smitten Collection. Nag Champa originates in India and is commonly used in incense. It’s a heady blend of ambery, sweet sandalwood and soft, peachy frangipani. A touch of jasmine is added for extra decadence.
